2025–26 BMSB Risk Season Begins 1 September 2025: Your Updated Compliance Guide
The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) poses a persistent biosecurity threat, especially during the seasonal risk period from 1 September to 30 April. While measures remain largely consistent, DAFF has introduced several important updates for the 2025–26 season that everyone in importing, logistics, and customs must know.
Key Changes for the 2025–26 BMSB Season
- Emerging Risk Countries Expanded
The Republic of Korea and Japan are now officially listed as emerging risk countries. Imports from these nations may now undergo random inspections, though treatment remains optional for these goods. - Airfreight Compliance Enhanced
Select high-risk goods arriving as airfreight from the USA and China will be subject to random inspections — with no mandatory treatment. (AgFisheriesForestry) - New Treatment: Ethyl Formate
A new compound, Ethyl Formate (plus CO₂), is now approved for offshore fumigation — the first of its kind for BMSB compliance. Onshore approval is under consideration for future seasons. (AgFisheriesForestry) - Updated Safeguarding Arrangement Scheme
The Safeguarding Arrangements Scheme has been upgraded with a revised application form and requires the Mitigation & Contingency Plan and Importer’s Declaration for each consignment. Random document assessments will follow upon lodgement. (AgFisheriesForestry)
Why These Updates Matter
Even minor compliance oversights can result in:
- Shipping delays or detention
- Costly re-export or treatment
- Damaged supply chain credibility
Staying proactive means the difference between smooth clearance and expensive disruption.
