U.S Shippers: What the Upcoming NMFC Changes Mean for Your Supply Chain

On July 19, 2025, the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system will undergo significant updates, reshaping how LTL freight is classified and priced across the U.S. These changes are designed to modernise and simplify freight classification, but they will impact rates, data accuracy, and operational processes for many shippers.

What’s Changing?

Density-Based Classification First: More commodities will be classified by density instead of commodity type, aligning classification with how freight behaves during transit.
13-Tier Density Scale: The previous 11-tier system will expand to 13, providing more precision in classification.
Streamlined Commodity Listings: Around 2,000 commodity listings will be consolidated to reduce confusion and improve consistency. (Read NMFTA’s official guidance)

What This Means for You

  • Rates May Change: Some shippers could see lower costs, while others may face increases depending on the new classifications.
  • Data Accuracy Becomes Critical: Precise dimensions and weight data will be essential to avoid reclassification fees and shipment delays.
  • Process & System Updates: Your teams and systems may need updates to work seamlessly with the new NMFC structure.
